Faith Journey

I walked under an evening sky filled with the promise of light on August 16, 2018. I had journeyed through childhood in a devoutly Methodist family and spent many happy years in Judaism through marriage. One day, in the midst of a personal crisis, Christ came into my heart. I felt him fill me with unconditional love. I was forever changed. One of my daughters told me that their lives got a whole lot better once I became Christian. I had known and loved God since I was a little girl, but now I knew and was ready to follow Jesus. I returned to the Methodist Church, and later became an Episcopalian. When someone threatened my life, I sought shelter from harm in the company of a dear Catholic friend.

I began to sense the protection and guidance of my deceased grandmother, Maria de la Garza, who had been born and raised Catholic. When I visited my grandparents in Mexico as a young teen, they took me to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. My grandmother had joined the faith of my Methodist grandfather, so we never went in, but the endurance of those making their way across the plaza and up the steps on their knees now spoke to me. I fought hard, prevailed over the looming danger, and entered the security of the Catholic Church on the morning of August 17, 2018.
